Windows 7 & 8.1 comes with a disk management utility built in which also called Local Disk Manager. Provides graphic interface mapping to your local disks and partitions. Local Disk Manager it's not only display the details of your local disks but allows you to create,delete,resize hard disk partitions without need a special disk utility, reboot or purchase additional software.
Before start i must explain that need to be very carefull with Partitions taks because you can do damage that you don't want.
Let's Start my friends.
How to Access Disk Management.
For Windows 7
- Click Start
- Right Click in Computer - - > Manage.
For Windows 8 or 8.1
- Right click in Start Button.
- Select Computer Management.
- Click in Storage - - > Disk Management.
If you would like to use command which is the fastest way for all Windows version then click in Start Button
For Windows 7
- Type in search diskmgmt.msc.
For Windows 8 or 8.1
- Right click in Start Button.
- Select Run.
- Type diskmgmt.msc.
How to Delete a Disk Partition.
If you don't need anymore one of your Partitions you can deleted. But Be Sure that you have backup all the data that you need.
- Identify the partition that you want to delete.
- Right Click and select Delete Volume.
- You will promtp that all the data will be lost. If you are sure click Yes.
- When the Partition wil be deleted it will change color from blue to black.
How to Create A Disk Partition.
Let's assume that you have a Disk with multiple partitions. You don't have free space and you must create a new partition.
- Find the unused partition in Disk Management.(It is with black color)
- Right Click and select New Simple Volume.
- Click Next.
- Selec the size of your Partition in MB and click Next.
- Assign a drive Letter that you want for the new Partition and click Next.
- Don't change any of these settings except from Volume Label Name. It's the name that you want to give in new Hard Disk.Click next.
- Click Finish to create the new Partition.
- When the new Partition created successfull the color will be change to blue and you can find it in My Computer as new Hard Drive.
How to Format a Disk Partition.
If you have buy a new Hard Disk and you woud like to use it as different Partition. When you insert the Internal Hard Drive in your PC you must Format the HDD.
- Identify the appropriate Disk in the Disk Manager. BE SURE THAT YOU HAVE SELECT THE RIGHT DISK.
- Right Click and select Format.
- Rename the Volume Label or use the default and click OK.
- You will Prompt that all the Data will be erase from your Disk. Click OK.
- It will take less a minute and the disk will be formated.
Your Disk is Ready and clear.
How to Resize a Disk Partition.
If you want to extend or shrink a partition that you already use follow the steps:
Extend Partition
- Identify the partition that you want to extend.
- Right Click and select Extend Simple Volume.
- Click Next.
- You can see the Total Volume, Maximum Available Space, Select the amount of space.
- You must check the Maximum Available Space which is the available space that can extend your Partition.
- By Default in Select the amount of space has all the available space that you can extend.
- If you don't want to extend all the available space change the number in MB that you need.
- Write the number in MB that you want to exetnd and click Next.
- Click Finish
Shrink Partition
- Identify the partition that you want to shrink.
- Right Click and select Shrink Simple Volume.
- You can see the Total size before shrink, Size of Available Shrink Space,Total size after shrink.
- Check the Avilable Shrink Space and type the number in Enter the amount of space to shrink in MB.
- Be careful because by default has all the available space of partition to shrink. Change the number in MB that you want to remove from partition.
- Click Shrink.
With the Shrink Simple Volume you must be very carefull and sure what you do because it's very easy to destroy a partition all delete data you need.
Shrink Partition it's not reccommended to do it in Local Disk C which is the Primary Partition of the Operating System.
Disk Management Utility has disadvantages but for basic tasks it's very helpfull. As IT i have use it lot of times. I don't recommended to do very advance tasks with PARTITIONS because it's very dangerous to destroy a disk or partitions which you don't. So Disk Management Utility can cover all of my tasks with partition.
